Principal, James Bloomer’s 27 years of experience with architecture and urban design include a wide range of regional and international work. After graduating from Columbia University with a Masters in Architecture and Urban Design in 1987, James returned to the West Coast, where he has spent a majority of his career working on projects in the Western US and Asia. Working for several small and medium-sized firms has given James the opportunity to be involved with all aspects of the design and construction process. His work has encompassed religious architecture and master planning, senior-living facilities, master planned communities, international schools in Asia and Africa as well as new city planning and small-scale residential community design in the Western US. James has been involved with many projects for Habitat for Humanity and earned an award of merit for his role on the Design Review Commission for the City of Lake Oswego, Oregon.
James joined COLAB Architecture + Urban Design in 2008 and relocated to Dubai, U.A.E. to work on large-scale architecture and urban design projects in the MENA region. His involvement in the UNESCO World Heritage - Khor Dubai (Dubai Creek) project provided intimate insight into the design world of Arab culture and tradition. He has also spent time in Abu Dhabi and Doha, Qatar, where he was a Design Review Manager for a large state owned real estate development company. His design review and over-sight responsibilities included large-scale projects such as the $1.4 billion Barwa Financial District in Doha, the urban restoration of the old city center of Al Khor, Qatar (under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza), and the planning of Lusail, a new city for 500,000 people along the Arabian Sea. James’ ability to meld design and real estate development was instrumental to his success with clients such as Barwa Real Estate and Qatari Diar Real Estate. James is a Qatar Sustainability and Assessment (QSAS) certified green professional in the Middle-East.
James is the Principal-in-charge of the Los Angeles office of COLAB Architecture + Urban Design.
