Finding design inspiration in the practice of Chinese medicine, COLAB transformed a 4000 sq. foot office building into a new location for an expanding acupuncture clinic. Patients are greeted by a finely crafted reception desk featuring a continuous ribbon of wood flowing from the ceiling, transforming into shelving, counter space, retail display and a tea service area as it wraps its way to the floor. The conference room features an herb cabinet reminiscent of a traditional Chinese apothecary, allowing this aspect of the practice to be celebrated while providing efficient storage and workspace for preparing remedies.
With minimal changes to the interior walls, COLAB reorganized the spaces to create a more legible and efficient plan based on a careful study of the staff’s activities, allowing the clinic to see more patients without increasing staffing. Colors were chosen to create a warm and comfortable atmosphere and to provide a sense of continuity with the clinics former location. Subtle variations among the individual treatment rooms provide for patient preferences while larger spaces are designed for flexibility allowing the clinic to explore new offerings.
