Thurman Row Houses: Portland, OR

These three houses are built on a 50 X 100 foot lot in northwest Portland. The two in front address the street and the one in back is constructed on a flag lot that is oriented toward two garden spaces and the rear of the lot. Each house has a unique plan and has its own amenity separate from the others. The developer also owned the historic “shotgun” house directly adjacent to the east and wanted to maintain the light and air on the side of that house. This was the impetus for the use of the flag lot design which was implemented to achieve this goal.
